Ice Age Slots
Ice Age video slots is a game from Tom Horn Gaming that brings a very new and unique twist to the virtual slot game. The game features four spinning reels, but contains no established win lines. Players can win at any time throughout gameplay when two symbols line up horizontally or diagonally – though the series does not have to begin on the first reel.
The Ice Age video slot also features special wins and a gamble feature, along with a wild symbol that will be discussed below…
Icy Symbols
Not unlike other offerings from Tom Horn Gaming, Ice Age contains symbols that in no way match the theme of the game. This really does not affect game performance, but does take away from the player experience. Most players enjoy symbols that match the theme, and this game misses the mark in that area.
The symbols used in Ice Age are watermelons, plums, oranges, lemons, and grapes, and acorns. Seriously! The gaming experience could have been improved by using symbols such as wooly mammoths or cavemen instead of fruit, but that’s just our opinion.
There are two symbols that do actually match the theme, and those are the snowflake and the ice rock. The ice rock serves as the game’s wild card. Spinning an ice rock onto any reel will substitute for any other symbol in the game and increase the chance of players winning by adding many more combinations that win.
Beyond the symbols, this slot also offers a potentially very lucrative spin function. Players who spin four consecutive symbols on the reels, without the aid of a wild symbol, will have the original bet multiplied by a randomly selected amount up to 10x the original bet.
Colourful Choice
If players choose to gamble the amount won in a spin, a 5-reel box will appear and players will have to correctly guess the colour of the next star to appear on the reel. If the player makes the correct choice the bet will be doubled, but if the player guesses incorrectly, the win will melt away.
This feature is an exciting addition that can mean huge payouts for players who guess correctly.
How Easy Is This Slot to Navigate?
The Ice Age slot is an easy game to play after a few spins and players will soon get used to having no set paylines. At first this can be difficult for players to adjust to, particularly those who are used to traditional payline structures. But after getting the hang of this unique “no established payline” format, it’s likely that players will begin to enjoy the low variance of only having to match at least two symbols horizontally or diagonally.
What’s more, the game pays out at 97% – so the low variance will attract new players who need a game that more spins end in a win than do not.
N-Ice Design
This slot features an array of beautifully designed symbols and has a very well put together background. However, as previously mentioned, the fruit and acorn symbols do not lend themselves to the overall theme of the game. Ice Age slots would have surely been better suited to possessing symbols that actually represent the Ice Age?!
This seems to be a recurring issue with many of Tom Horn Gaming games, they are beautifully designed but the symbols do not really match the game, which causes distraction and ultimately a lack of longevity.
An Attractive Proposition
This game brings something new and unique to the slot experience with no established pay lines and this is certainly a welcome addition. Anytime a company offers something different than the normal, players will be attracted. Only having to match 2 symbols horizontally or diagonally will attract many players looking for an easier way to win.
The special features of the game are also a nice touch. A multiplier that pays out when a player matches a full row of symbols is a cool addition that players will enjoy but the best feature is definitely the gamble option. Most gamble features require a player to choose heads or tails on a flipped coin, but Ice Age flips the script and players have to guess the colour of the next star in a 5-reel spin. Having this gamble feature makes it different in comparison to other games and makes for a nice change of pace.
The only downside to Ice Age – as already mentioned – is that the symbols not matching the theme of the game. This is not a huge issue, as it is cosmetic in nature, but does take away from what could be a more enjoyable game.
