Lucas Paqueta subject of betting probe
West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta is being investigated by the FA and FIFA for possible breaches of the betting policy.
The probe allegedly deals with bets that were placed in Brazil, Paqueta’s home country. It is unknown whether Paqueta is accused of placing the bets himself, or if he did, how many and for how much.
“shocked” by the investigation
Paqueta, 25, said that he has not placed any bets and is “shocked” by the investigation.
Reigning English Premier League champions Manchester City recently bid to purchase Paqueta, but were forced to put their pursuit on hold as the investigations continue. West Ham supposedly set Paqueta’s price tag at £85m ($108.4m), while City is reportedly yet to offer more than £70m ($89.2m).
“I admitted last week that there had been an inquiry from Manchester City but I’ve got no more to add to that at this moment in time,” manager David Moyes said last week before news of the betting investigation.
West Ham sold midfielder Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105m ($133.9m) earlier this summer, leaving them light at midfield as it is. Paqueta has been a standout performer since he arrived from Olympique Lyon last August.
Man City, meanwhile, lost midfielder İlkay Gündoğan to Barcelona this summer. They brought in Mateo Kovačić, but are looking for further reinforcements as they attempt to defend titles in the EPL, Champions League, and FA Cup.
Teams have until the transfer window closes on September 1 to negotiate deals with other clubs.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney was suspended for eight months in May after he confessed to 232 betting infractions, including betting on his own team.
