Many Brits may have noticed how quiet nightlife is in 2024 compared to past years. With research from the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) confirming that independent nightclubs are closing at a rate of about five per week, and the number of nightclubs is down 40% over the last four years, the data suggests that by 2027, nightclubs could become rare gems in the UK nightlife scene.

As an online gaming platform, we’re always curious about what activities people enjoy – therefore we were keen to discover how Brits are opting to spend their free time and whether nightclubs are really a thing of the past. Surveying 1,000 adults across the UK, we set out to uncover what’s happening with nightlife preferences in the UK.

The big shift: bingo over nightclubs
Believe it or not, a quarter of Brits now prefer a night at the bingo instead of a nightclub. Yep, you read that right – bingo! It’s not just for your grandma anymore. People love the social vibe, the excitement of winning, and the fact that it’s a bit easier on the ears than a booming nightclub as a quarter (25%) of Brits opt for the money-making activity.

Additionally, 21% confirm they’ve noticed more bars, pubs, and venues hosting bingo and quiz-themed nights across the country, and a fifth (21%) of Brits shared that they would rather spend their evening making money than spending it.
Generational and regional splits
Gen Z is leading the charge with some interesting attitudes. One in ten (10%) of 18-24-year-olds feel they’re ‘too old’ for nightclubs (crazy right?), and one in five (20%) find the typical night out just plain ‘boring.’ Instead, they’re all about planned activities such as pottery painting or outdoor fun, and they prefer them more than millennials do.
Regionally, it was found nearly half (49%) of Scots would rather engage in sports-based activities than attend nightclubs or bingo sessions. Meanwhile, nearly two-thirds (62%) of Londoners prefer live entertainment, and half (50%) of North Eastern Brits would rather join a local pub quiz.

Additionally, people in Wales and the South West are particularly done with clubbing – with 74% and 64%, respectively, staying away from the dance floors.
What does this mean for the future of fun?
Our survey reveals a broader trend towards diverse and inclusive social activities. More people are opting for experiences that offer social interaction and entertainment without the hassle of late nights and loud environments.
It’s clear that Brits’ nightlife preferences are evolving rapidly but, whether you’re into bingo, pub quizzes, or catching a live show, there’s no shortage of exciting ways to spend your evenings (including playing some of our fabulous games). Nightclubs might be fading, but the fun is far from over!
