Legislation aiming to curtail gambling advertising in Canada is facing delays after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that he would step down from his position.
The 53-year-old’s departure comes at a time when support for his Liberal Party is at rock bottom, with a general election on the horizon.
create nationwide rules for gambling advertising to protect consumers
Bill S-269 aims to create nationwide rules for gambling advertising to protect consumers. It would take on board feedback from regulators, First Nations, and lawmakers across the provinces.
Some proposals include limiting the volume and location of ads, as well as further prohibitions on famous people appearing in marketing campaigns. Funds would also go toward researching the impacts of ads on underage people and creating more stringent support services.
The bill remains in the House of Commons following a long-running debate before Christmas about separate issues, with the 2025 session beginning on January 27. It cleared the Senate in November with ease. Insiders believe the ongoing political uncertainty in the country could mean the bill is put on the back burner.
