Thoroughly tasteless

As readers of this site likely very well know, the Super Bowl is a sports betting bonanza. And in the leadup to this past weekend’s Super Bowl LIX, won by the Philadelphia Eagles, sportsbooks were doing whatever they could to attract bettors’ dollars. One such book was BetOnline.ag, which made a disgusting post on social media that employed a fake video of Travis Kelce’s mother lifting her shirt to expose her bra-covered breasts.

Advertising BetOnline’s wild prop bets, the post read: “Donna Kelce LOVES the spotlight! Naturally, we opened props on her and some are CRAZY GOOD!”

looking on was an AI-generated version of who one would assume to be Taylor Swift

Underneath was a graphic showing a “Will Donna Kelce show cleavage?” with the related odds. That’s bad enough. Worse is that accompanying the graphic was an AI-generated/deepfake video of a woman who looks like Donna Kelce wearing Travis’s Kansas City Chiefs jersey, absent-mindedly lifting her shirt to show her midriff and breasts before realizing what she did and covering herself back up. Looking on was an AI-generated version of who one would assume to be Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce’s girlfriend.

Overlayed on the video was a voiceover of broadcaster Joe Buck scolding it as a “disgusting act,” which was really audio from a 2004 game in which Minnesota Vikings’ legendary receiver Randy Moss mimed a mooning to the Green Bay Packers home crowd after he scored a touchdown.

Commenters reply in disgust

Replies to the post were almost universally negative. Many commenters opined that BetOnline would get sued, while others scolded the company, calling the post “shit” and “abhorrent.”

Donna Kelce gained notoriety two years ago when her sons Travis (Kansas City Chiefs) and Jason (Philadelphia Eagles) faced each other in the Super Bowl. They were the first brothers two square off in the big game.

Community notes were later added to the post, noting that it could be considered deepfake porn, which is a crime, depending on the jurisdiction.

This writer scrolled through BetOnline’s Super Bowl LIX non-statistical prop bets and could not find the one advertised, so either it was just clickbait, or it was removed because of the outrage, though the horribly distasteful post remained. There was still one prop bet involving Donna Kelce: “How many times will Donna Kelce be shown [on the telecast].”
