President Donald Trump has implemented a tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, claiming that the emergency move is necessary in the face of problems with illegal aliens and drugs. However, Canadians aren’t going down without a fight.
Travel agencies in Canada have reported that they are already seeing the impact of a boycott on travel to the US from its neighbor to the north. Many Canadians are canceling trips to the US in retaliation for the anti-Canadian stance of Trump, including trips to gambling mecca Las Vegas.
it would cost the country around $2.1bn in lost spending
Canada is the top source of international visitors to the US, with 20.4 million visits in 2024. The US Travel Association has estimated that if Canadians do boycott travel to the US, even slightly, it would cost the country around $2.1bn in lost spending. This is reflective of a 10% reduction in visitation, also resulting in 14,000 job losses for Americans.
Nevada, the home of Las Vegas casinos, is among the top five most visited states by Canadians, in addition to Florida, California, New York, and Texas.
However, there is some hope. President Justin Trudeau of Canada declared this week that Trump has agreed to hold off on the tariffs for 30 days. Trump will attempt to work with Trudeau to solve the Fentanyl crisis on the US-Canada border. The 25% tariff on steel and aluminium imports from Canada is due to come into effect March 12.
