A Major League Baseball franchise is on its way to Las Vegas after the Athletics left Oakland at the end of last season. The team, though, will play in Sacramento for three years while its new ballpark is being built. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed this week that the construction is expected to finish in 2028.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the ballpark is set to take place this spring. The stadium will be located on the site of the demolished Tropicana casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The Las Vegas Stadium Authority gave the green light to proceed in December, with $380m of the $1.75bn total cost coming from public funds.

Team owner Jon Fisher will contribute $1.1bn to help construct the 33,000-seat stadium, with the remaining money coming through a $300m loan from Goldman Sachs and US Bank. The team ownership is reportedly looking to sell some equity in the franchise to possible investors.
