Eminem Joins Consortium Trying to Bring WNBA Team Back to Detroit for First Time Since 2009

As Detroit’s most famous son, Eminem is looking to bring a bit more attention to his hometown by joining a consortium that is vying to attract a WNBA franchise.

Sportico reported that the rapper has joined owners of the city’s major league sports teams and other notable figures like current Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff to secure a women’s basketball team for the city. Doing so could cost in the ballpark of nine figures, with Sportico estimating the average cost of a franchise is approximately $96m.

More than ten cities are in the hunt, including Cleveland, Austin, and Philadelphia.

The city had a WNBA team in the past, but the Detroit Shock moved to Tulsa after the 2009 season despite winning three championships in the seven seasons in the Motor City. A new WNBA team would play at Little Caesars Arena, home of the NBA’s Detroit Pistons and the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings.
