Ireland finally has its own gambling regulator, with the Gaming Regulatory Authority (GRA) officially forming earlier this month. This new body aims to modernize the country’s approach, taking over licensing and overseeing the sector.
A journalist recently completed a report on the bill that enabled this transformation, which the industry strongly opposed. During the 15-minute RTE Prime Time segment on Irish television, Conor Wilson can be seen showing how easy it is to create accounts on gambling sites and claim free bets without verifying their identity:
Wilson placed a €5 ($5.50) each-way wager on Golden Ace in the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle race with the welcome free bet at odds of +5000. It won the race, which resulted in a total payout of €322.50 ($351.60) for Wilson, leaving people stunned.
In another part of the segment, Wilson speaks with the new GRA Chief Executive Anne Marie Caulfield, who explains the upcoming curtailments on free bets means sportsbooks can’t offer personalized free bets only to certain customers. They must be available to everyone.
