Former Texas University Professor Stole $941k to Fund Gambling Addiction

A former associate professor at Tarleton State University in Texas stole $941,128 from her former employer and used the money to fund her gambling addiction. Dr. Julie Howell headed up the educational leadership and technology department when she committed the theft.

She admitted her guilt and is awaiting sentencing on June 10. The offense carries a maximum fine of $250,000 and up to ten years in prison.

Howell used two cards that were supposed to be only for school-related transactions for her own expenditures over a two-year period.

She went to great lengths to disguise the charges as related to school business by making payments to certain PayPal entities before transferring the money into her personal account.

Tarleton University has assured staff that this sort of incident will not happen again as new protocols have been put in place.
