The future is coming to Sin City, with plans already in motion to build the Las Vegas Spaceport. The Clark County Board of Commissioners gave United Spaceports Corporation the green light in May 2024 to begin building an airstrip with the eventual aim of developing a place where people could launch into the stratosphere.
The company heading up this project is now giving people the chance to buy their own satellite for $5.5m:
According to United Spaceports CEO Rob Lauer, these satellites will give people the most secure communications and data platforms ever seen. He remarked how we are living in an “era where sovereign control of data is no longer a luxury — it’s a necessity.”
no longer just governments that have access to space-based security and power
While he acknowledged that the potential market initially will be small, he believes that the ultra-rich need such a platform and that it’s no longer just governments that have access to space-based security and power.
United Spaceports is now accepting deposits, with the promise to launch these private satellites within two years.
Customers will get a range of services as part of their Black Star 1000 satellite package, including an AI-powered Nvidia data center, a telescope allowing people to look out into outer space, and 24/7 customer support.
The company isn’t afraid of innovating, with CEO Lauer revealing plans in March to create an air taxi service to bring fans to games at Allegiant Stadium in three minutes for just $30.
