Earlier this month, Alex Ovechkin made history by breaking the NHL goalscoring record. He defeated Wayne Gretzky’s longstanding record from 21 years ago, bagging his 895th goal in front of a sell-out crowd against the New York Islanders.
the most expensive Ovechkin card sale ever
Another record was broken this week. An Alex Ovechkin rookie patch auto card made history by selling for $381,000 on Monday at Sotheby’s, the most expensive Ovechkin card sale ever. It’s also the third-highest NHL card sale of all time:
The 2005-06 Upper Deck The Cup Hockey Autographs Rookie Patches Gold Rainbow /8 BGS 8/10 card was sold as part of the Timeless Titans | Legendary Sports Cards auction at Sotheby’s, an auction house. The $381,000 sale easily beat the previous-highest Ovechkin card sale, which was $182,400.
Although the card may have broken the record for any Ovechkin card, it is far from the $3.75m paid for a 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky PSA 10 via private sale in 2021. Notably, Gretzky was on hand to shake Ovechkin’s hand to congratulate the Russian after he scored his 895th goal earlier this month.
