The latest twist in the tale that is Dylan Phelan’s extraordinary double bet from more than a year ago on +8000 and +12500 longshots is that Ladbrokes is agreeing to pay out €100,000 ($113,465).
While it’s an improvement from the previous stance of not returning any money to the stable lad, it’s still below the €319,440 ($362,454) sum he should have won from the €30 ($34) each-way double bet on two races at the tracks in Ballinrobe and Limerick.
Ladbrokes said that the two races were under investigation
Explaining its original decision not to pay out the bet, Ladbrokes said that the two races were under investigation due to “the apparent improvement in the form shown by the winners.” Per its terms and conditions, a payout was not necessary.
Despite the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) still investigating the races, the widespread attention the matter was getting on social media seemingly led to Ladbrokes reaching a middle ground with Dylan Phelan.
