While the NCAA is permitting sportsbooks to use its official data feed for the first time, they have to agree to no longer offer certain markets if they avail of this service. Genius Sports is now the exclusive distributor of the feed to operators until 2032, allowing sportsbooks to offer the most up-to-date live betting odds.
The NCAA’s revenue from the relationship will go toward betting harm education programs and dealing with the harassment of student-athletes, coaches, and officials from bettors.
those that relate to the underperformance of a specific player
Markets on the checklist include those that relate to the underperformance of a specific player, such as rushing yards or points totals being below a set number, and wagers on negative outcomes that are easily manipulable, such as missing field goals or conceding a turnover. Other no-gos include injury-related markets, decisions made by officials, off-field actions, awards determined by a public vote, and novelty wagers.
The NCAA wants to be very clear that licensing its feed to sportsbooks isn’t in any way a suggestion that it’s promoting betting. The organization’s Managing Director of Enterprise Risk Management, Clint Hangebrauck, emphasized: “We still have strict restrictions against advertisements and sponsorships associated with our championships.”
