The Roaring Twenties

The Roaring Twenties Slots

The Roaring Twenties is a 5-reel Prohibition-era video slot from the OpenBet gaming platform. The age of Fitzgerald and Luciano, Dempsey, Chaplin and Herbert Hoover is one of the most storied in history, so it was only a matter of time before an opportunistic software company decided to base a video slot on it. The Roaring Twenties slot features 9 configurable paylines and a betting range which starts at 0.25 and tops out at 10 credits per line.

If you’re fascinated by the iconography of the Jazz Age, give this one a spin and see if you can win some cash. There’s a 1,000 top prize to be claimed, and plenty of smaller amounts too. The game also features wild symbols and a scatter icon triggering a bonus round. Unlike most slots, wins pay in all directions rather than from left to right.

Bright Lights, Big City

The action in The Roaring Twenties takes place on a 5x3 grid densely populated by both symbols related to the theme and a number of coloured playing card icons. Either side of the reels, there are tall, rectangular windows, bulbs burning from within, and the title of the game appears above the reels in old-fashioned writing against a hazy backdrop of the Chrysler Building.

Underneath the lowermost row, you’ll find a control panel housing all the buttons you require to play the game. This is where you can click into the Paytable to get up to speed on the various values associated with matching combinations, activate the maximum bet quickly by clicking Bet Max, determine the number of lines by clicking Lines and regulate your stake-per-line by clicking Stake.

Mobsters, Cops and Ballroom Dancers

There are ten symbols in total to watch out for, although somewhat disappointingly, four of them don’t relate to the theme at all. What does a 10, a Jack, a Queen and a King have to do with the 1920s? Sure, you could say that gambling was one arm of the mobsters who controlled illegal booze, but really, the cards are a waste: we’d have preferred to see more icons related to the theme. After all, The Roaring Twenties was a crazily visual age: the developers could have done so much more.

Anyway, the playing cards represent the lowest-value symbols in the entire game. The Jack, for instance, pays just one credit for three matching, two for four and ten for five. The Ace is much better: four for three, 15 for four and 25 for five.

The real stars of the show are the weatherbeaten icons which are, in some way or another, associated with The Roaring Twenties. Thus, we have a sepia-toned newspaper, a fancy American saloon car, a pair of ballroom dancers, one female, one male, an outraged cop (no doubt he’s just stumbled across a cachet of liquor!) and, lastly, a mobster wearing a white fedora and chewing the stub of a cigar: not gonna lie, this mafioso is a spitting image for the most famous racketeer of all, Al Capone.

As stated, wins pay in all directions: all you need to do is find three or more on adjacent reels. The newspaper icon is wild, able to substitute for others in the game to help you form wins, but for the most part the images simply grant pay-outs. The motor car pays five for three, 25 for four and 50 for five, while the outraged police officer grants 25 for three, 75 for four and 500 for five. At the top of the tree is Capone himself; he pays out 50 for three in a line, 100 for four and – wait for it – 1,000 for all five.

The wild is not the only special icon, incidentally; there’s another in the form of a couple of beer barrels. Land three or more to kickstart the mini-game. You’ll be taken to a second screen, which shows a bunch of barrels in some sort of warehouse. There are six in total, each containing a different multiplier. They include x5, x25, x100 and x250. Cruelly, there’s also a x0 multiplier (in other words, no multiplier at all).

Worth Roaring About?

The Roaring Twenties isn’t the most feature-rich slot game you’re likely to come across, but it’s nonetheless pretty good value. We like those little jazz jingles that play when you hit a win, and we think the bonus game is good value, though the pay-table isn’t the most lucrative. Over all, a solid offering: try it out.
