Dragons and gold. Two things that would we’d love to find. They’re both super common in fairy tales after all. One challenges the bravery, one rewarding the brave soul. Put them together and you should have one heck of a game.
But does this PlayPearls game strike gold or fail in its alchemic mission?
Lair of the Land
It starts off with a very stylish loading page with pretty lights and a shiny claw beside the game’s name. It feels like a hidden, mysterious place. If you’re quick you’ll also spot the purple dragon’s egg. It’s a good sign about the game.
And one that’s deserved. The first thing you’ll notice is how organised the layout is. The game’s title is in gold lettering in capitals on the top middle above the main display. It has the golden claw shown earlier, one on each end. On the left and right of the reels are the 25 game lines in white lettering and gold background, with a diagram of each on the Paytable if you’re curious.
The game takes centre stage and the only background are the hints of a dark sky. The 5 reels in the game really stand out. The symbols are a mixture of letters representing the higher numbers of a deck of playing cards and picture images such as the fiery dragon, book with a shiny jewel and a scroll. Real detail has gone into them. The medieval music is otherwise indistinct.
Dragon Play
As you’d expect from a game that gets the layout right, the gameplay is great visually too. When you hit a winning spin, the icons really come into their own. This includes the tower having its sky come to menacing life and the gem in the green jewel turning a brighter green and spinning around. The letter icons aren’t left out, turning around at a rate of knots.
You can’t change the number of lines you play for, but you do have several options for betting. It ranges from 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 4.00. As you go up the betting numbers range from 2.50 to 100. It’s all super easy to tell, especially with how much you win. You can also use the Autoplay feature, though it doesn’t have any settings.
The paytable is a little odd in that it doesn’t show the icons in order of worth. So the dagger weapon is top left of the page when it is only worth a maximum of 10. The jewelled book is next, which is the second most valuable symbol overall but is followed by the scroll which is one of the least useful. The symbol you want most, the dragon, is bottom of the screen. The right hand side goes down from King to Jack. However, the Jack is worth more than either the King or Queen, who are almost worth exactly the same. The only difference being a seemingly pointless 0.5 credit change if you get two lines. Very odd.
Golden Bonus
As you’d guess from the title, gold and dragon eggs are the order of the day. If you get 3 or more Bonus symbols (a shiny gold coin) you get taken to a screen with purple dragon eggs. You choose from 15 of them until you collect the bonus.
There is also a Wildcard symbol. The green-tinted icon replaces everything except the dragon and gold coins. You’ll also want to look out for that dragon symbol. As well as being the most valuable icon credit wise, it also gives you free spins. If you get 3, you get 8 spins, 4 is worth 15 spins and 5 give out 40 spins. The spins are counted down on the bottom of the screen, and when they run out a message flashes up on the screen telling you how much you won.
It may seem odd for a card to have 2 different uses, but the game itself is easy to play. There may not be any instructions, but they aren’t really necessary. At the Help button you’ll see the 3 page Paytable and bonus notices.
Flamin’ Good Fun
This isn’t a complex or spectacular game but it is well designed in terms of layout and icons for the most part. While it isn’t too challenging there is fun to be had. It may not burn too bright, but there are flames of excitement.
